Ginny Povall: South African Pinot Noir

If you know me you know I'm a Pinot Noir fan. I was excited to try this one not only because of it's beautiful label, or the fact it was found for me by the lovely ladies at Grape and Nectar , but because it's from South Africa. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

South Africa has had alcohol bans over the course of their lockdowns this past year. Despite the reasons for doing this (to reduce alcohol related crime that could overload their health system) , it's caused severe implications for many of their wineries. The movement to save South African Wineries has encouraged me to try and learn more about the amazing wine they have to offer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The grapes that go into this bottle are hand harvested from Hemel-en-Aarde just east of Cape Town, a place known for exceptional Pinot Noir. Retailing at the £26 mark, this 2017 Botanica, Mary Delany collection Pinot Noir is for those Pinot Noir lovers out there.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

British Artist Mary Delany is behind the beautiful label, and Ginny Povall is the winemaker behind the Botanica Wines brand. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For wine nerds like me: This Pinot offers complex flavours from whole bunch fermentation (despite full destemming), and ageing in 20% new oak gives a rounded mouth feel. Lovely cherry, strawberry and floral notes dominate the pallet but the layered complexity from the winemaking techniques come into their own making this absolutely outstanding.

You can buy it along with the rest of the range at The Wine Reserve.
