03. WOTW - Domaine Fourrey Petit Chablis

This week we have a 2018 Petit Chablis from Domaine Fourrey.

A Petit Chablis grapes are still grown within the confines of the Chablis area, but they have a different soil type to a classic Chablis and it’s higher classifications.

For Chablis, Chablis grand cru, and premiere cru sites the grapes are grown in Kimmeridgean soil, which is a blend of clay, limestone and fossilised oyster shells and it is praised for the flinty minerality that Chablis is synonymous for.

Petit Chablis grapes are grown in Portlandian soil, which is a fairly similar but is younger in it’s fossilised properties and not as rich.

(Bet you never thought you’d read so much about soil huh.. )

Despite it’s soil type, Petit Chablis comes at a great price point, and is a brilliant introduction to more minerally wines, and is great if you love a cool climate chardonnay. However, if you have a few extra ££’s then it’s worth splashing out on a Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru, which will exhibit richer and riper fruit flavours and flint.

I bought this bottle (and a few cases more) at Domaine Fourrey, on a sunny afternoon last Summer. Although they don’t have distributers in England however you can buy direct from their website.
